Research Background
Relying on over 20 years of accumulation of industry data, continuous tracking of industry changes and in-depth researches, BOABC will provide you with a valuable analysis report on the rice industry and investment.

Rice output increased, rice consumption decreased, and rice prices declined. The per unit area yield of early rice decreased in 2024 due to heavy rainfalls in many regions, resulting in a reduction in output. The output of semilate rice, single-cropping late rice and double-cropping late rice increased steadily thanks to expanded area and improved per unit area year. Overall, China’s rice production in 2024 grew by 0.45 percent year on year. Affected by the decline in rice consumption for both food and feed, the total consumption of rice decreased slightly. BOABC predicts that China’s rice consumption will reach 196.55 million tons in 2024/25, a drop of 2.08 percent from the year earlier. As rice production increased but consumption declined, prices continued to fall. BOABC forecasts a year-on-year decline of 1 percent in rice prices in 2024/25.

The decline in rice prices has led to a slight year-on-year decrease in the cash income of rice planting. According to BOABC’s estimations, the cash income from rice planting reached 9,135 yuan/hectare (609yuan/mu) in 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 1.23 percent. By variety, the cash income of early indica rice planting increased by 3.12 percent year on year to 6,600yuan/hectare (440 yuan/mu); that of semilate indica rice planting dropped by 2.08 percent year on year to 12,450 yuan/hectare (830 yuan/mu); that of late indica rice planting declined by 0.35 percent year on year to 7,350yuan/hectare (490yuan/mu); and that of japonica rice fell by 3.47 percent year on year to 10,125 yuan/hectare (675yuan/mu).

China’s rice imports plunged. In the January-to-November period, 2024, China imported a total of 1.2762 million tons of rice, decreasing by 1.124 million tons or 46.83 percent from the same period last year, according to data from the General Administration of Customs. In the first half of 2024, international rice prices were high, resulting in higher rice import costs and a year-on-year decline in rice imports in China. As India gradually relaxed its rice export policies in the second half of the year, China’s rice imports grew rapidly.
This report summarizes the characteristics of rice production, trade, consumption and price changes, and makes a forecast for the development and market trends of China’s rice industry in 2025.
BOABC believes this report is an important decision-making basis for rice producers, traders, processors and agricultural investors, as well as a valuable reference for industry associations and research institutions.
