Research on China’s dairy cattle farming industry

Strategic agricultural reform was commenced a decade ago with animal farming as the priority for support, whereas dairy farming has been accorded importance for development in animal farming due to its backwardness but huge potential. 1997-2008, the dairy farming industry gained substantial growth thanks to policy support, consumption demand and facilitation by dairy processing companies and relevant sectors. The dairy cattle inventory hit 13,879,000 in 2007, up 213.65% from 1997 and the inventory stood at 13,300,000 in 2008 despite the impact from the melamine incident. It fell to 12.18 million heads in the end of the first quarter of 2009 and rallied to 12.57 million heads in the end of the August. The dairy cattle inventory recorded 12.1850 million in 2009...


Review of Chinese pork industry
Pork accounts for 47% of the total meat production in China, followed by eggs (29%) and poultry meat (17%). Beef and lamb only account for 4% and 3% respectively.In 2009, the number of farms with breeding stock less than 50 accounts for 26% of the total hog breeding farms in China. Large swine farms raising 10000-50000 hogs only account for 6% of the total. However, the scale of Chinese hog breeding industry is rapidly rising.Pork price becomes a society focus in recent years. Actually, the fluctuation showed in pork market since 2006. In 2006, retailing price of fresh pork meat was 12.12 Yuan/ kg and soared to 23.49 Yuan/kg in 2008. After that, the price kept falling and has dropped to 18 Yuan/kg. ...



The winter wheat yield drops again
Due to pest attack and adverse weather, wheat yield is predicted to drop 1.41% this year from last year. The nation’s winter wheat production is predicted to be 105.704 million MT this year, 0.32% less than last year. Taking into account of the reduction of spring wheat acreage, the nation’s total wheat production is predicted to drop 0.8% this year to a level of 112.284 million MT, compared with last year...

Hog production affected by floods
270 counties of 9 southern provinces, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Fujian, Guizhou, Chongqing, Guangdong, Sichuan and Zhejiang, have recently suffered from heavy floods. But on the whole, the floods have not caused serious damage to livestock production in the nation. Though the 9 provinces jointly contribute to 40% of the nation’s livestock production, the regions hit by floods only contribute to 10% of the nation’s total....

Profit of soybean crush continues to drop

The factory price of soybean oil is stable within this week. On June 21st, prices of first grade bean oil in Harbin and Jiangsu are 7600 and 7500 Yuan/MT, unchanged from last week. Prices of fourth grade bean oil in Dalian, Shandong and Guangdong are 7050, 7000, 7000 Yuan/MT, also unchanged from last week....


Domestic cotton imports drops on May
May 2010, Chinese cotton import volumes reached 198,000 MT, reduced by 38.89% compared with the previous month, and went up 30.69% compared with the same period of last year. In the year of 2009/2010 (which begins in August), the total cotton import reaches 2.037 million tons, increase by 66.59% compared with the same period of the previous year...

Fertilizer production continues to drop

In May, the Chinese fertilizer output reached 5.838 million tons, increased by 3.0% compared with the same period of the previous year, but declined by 1.6% compared with the previous month. The fertilizer production continuously reduces since March. In January to May, the total production reached 27.515 million tons, increased by 5.7% compared with the same period of the previous year....


Wheat import rising, safety index falling

To ensure a stable wheat safety index, the government is presumed to increase wheat imports this year. Apart from the estimated full use of wheat import quotas granted to private companies, the government is expected to bring in 1 million MT wheat as short-term state reserve. Total wheat imports may be 2 million MT in this crop year. The nation’s wheat safety index is predicted to be 35.7% in the next crop year...


COFCO completed construction of hog production bases in Tianjin and Jiangsu
COFCO has recently completed the construction of two hog production bases jointly capable of 600,000 heads a year. One is located in Tianjin and the other in Jiangsu. COFCO plans to further expand their capacity. The second production base with 100,000 heads capacity in Tianjin is about to produce in August....

Rapeseed purchase price slightly rises

The current rapeseed purchase prices in China are 3900 - 4000 Yuan/ton, slightly higher than the prices at the end of May (3750 - 3900 Yuan/ton) and also higher compared to the same period of last year (3500-3700 Yuan/ton). BOABC believes the reduction of rapeseed production this year could lead to increase in rapeseed purchase price, but impacted by the continuing slump of soybean price, the increase of rapeseed purchase price is limited...


Egg price is expected to rise

On June 30, the egg's average wholesale price in 36 large and middle Chinese cities was 6.72 Yuan/kg, declined by 0.38% compared to the previous week. The factory price goes up 1.3% in this week. At the background of balanced demand and supply, the rising cost will promote egg price rising....
